The idealistic society looks at age gaps in relationships as quite an important aspect for long-lasting relationships. A number of societies strongly believe in and encourage relationships with ideal age differences.
The “older husband-younger wife” relationships are more generally acceptable than relationships where the woman is much older than the man. Although some people may find the focus on age difference in relationships somewhat absurd and old-fashioned, it is actually one of the important factors that can affect the outcome of a relationship.
One case in point is the “same age” relationship where couples having the same age are not only good for friendship but also for long-term marital commitment.
Same age couples tend to have similar levels of thinking and at times cannot understand each other’s view-point as they tend to see things in the same angle, which eventually results to a higher rate of miscommunication than understanding.
All the same, age difference in relationships is no longer considered a big issue in today’s much more liberal society. Taking into consideration the acceptance of remarriages and common divorce, although affecting the sanctity of marriage, has erased the naïve thinking of “perfect age relationships”.
The new standards of living together, same sex relationships, single motherhood, and other factors have opened freedom to relationship restrictions, including the freedom to enter into a relationship with huge age differences in both women and men.
Despite the reality that age difference in a relationship has a significant effect, more and more people still opt to get into these types of commitments and their relationships work in a different way, particularly for younger men and older women relationships.
According to surveys, big age differences affect the quality of spousal bonds with undermined significance thus increasing the tension in the relationship. Since a big age difference is one factor that influences the success of marriage, an appropriate age difference between two people is advisable.
As with age difference statistics, it has also been established that marital relationships where husbands are much older than their wives, are more likely to fall apart than those relationships of same age couples or that of which wives are older than husbands.
The ideal age gap that has been confirmed to work best is when the woman is five years younger than the man — the age difference does not put too much dissimilarity in their age, including their thoughts and outlooks.
Before getting into a relationship with someone that is much older or younger, you have to take note of three things: be old enough to have experience in life, hence be adequately mature to better understand life and its necessities; neither of the persons to be involved have a problem with age gap; and finally, there should be a connection between the couple that makes them right for each other.
